In this experience-led session, I’ll share my journey from individual contributor to Head of Platform Engineering—highlighting the common pitfalls tech leaders face while building strong teams and becoming managers people want to follow. We’ll dig into why the engineer-manager gap exists, how to build trust early, and what it takes to drive clarity, accountability, and motivation through effective 1:1s, delegation, and technical credibility.

We'll also dive into the practical side of platform engineering—how to build for impact, not just infrastructure. You’ll leave with actionable frameworks and real-world lessons to help you lead with intention and build platforms that deliver value.

Robert Gemrot In this talk, we'll dive into the technical foundations of handling secrets in modern DevOps environments. We'll explore best practices for securely managing sensitive data such as API keys, credentials, and tokens across various stages of the development lifecycle. Topics will include secret storage strategies (e.g., Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, SOPS), secret injection techniques in CI/CD pipelines, access control, encryption at rest and in transit, and mitigating risks like secret sprawl.
